WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) has undoubtedly become one of the fastest growing waste streams worldwide due to an unprecedented level of electronics being produced. It is also one of the most hazardous if not managed properly, causing major health and environmental problems. The European Union developed legislation twenty years ago in 2003, to ensure that systems for the collection, treatment and recycling of electronic waste would be in place throughout the EU.
Since then, in the fast-paced world of technology, electronic equipment has become even more dominant in our day-to-day lives. The internet revolution and the incredible speed in the development of processors means technology is now everywhere. Mobile phones, electric cars, smart televisions, CCTV, heat pumps, solar panels, automation in factories, the list goes on leading to the actual planet we are living on, is changing and not for the better.
With all these changes in mind, the significance of sustainable practices cannot be overlooked. Founded in 2007, GreenIT which is managed by experienced persons from the waste industry, has emerged as a trailblazer in the reuse sector in Ireland. Their commitment to revitalizing technology through refurbishment has not only reduced electronic waste but also provided affordable and reliable solutions to predominantly schools and charities but also businesses and individuals alike. This is the journey of GreenIT and its contributions to the evolving IT landscape.

Commitment to Sustainability
From its inception GreenIT recognized the urgent need to address the mounting problem of electronic waste. Rather than allowing discarded IT equipment to languish in landfills, the company saw an opportunity to breathe new life into these devices.
Through meticulous refurbishment processes, GreenIT not only salvages functional components but also ensures that environmentally harmful substances are properly disposed of. By extending the lifespan of technology, the company significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with the production of new devices.
Quality and Reliability
One might question the reliability of refurbished IT equipment but a rigorous testing and certification process to ensure that each device meets very high standards.
The GreenIT team of skilled technicians, refurbishes laptops, desktops, Chromebooks, MacBooks and iPads restoring them to their optimal performance. By providing warranties and customer support, GreenIT guarantees customer satisfaction and instills confidence in the quality of their products.
Advancing the Reuse Agenda
GreenIT has worked closely with University of Limerick funded by the Irish Environmental Protection Agency to promote reuse including the projects TriREUSE – Trialling the Preparation for Reuse of Consumer Laptops, Tablets and Smartphones and currently the Mainstreaming Circularity Mainstreaming Circular Economies Through Collaboration and Co-Creation (MainCirc) project.
They are delighted to be involved and to bring their experiences and knowledge to the CE-RISE Circular Economy Resource Information System.
Affordability and Accessibility
In a world where technological advancements come at a steep price, GreenIT plays a vital role in making technology accessible to a wider audience. By offering refurbished devices at significantly lower prices than their brand-new counterparts, GreenIT enables small businesses, Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, and budget-conscious individuals to acquire reliable IT equipment without compromising on quality.
This affordability factor also contributes to bridging the digital divide and promoting digital inclusion, as more people can now access the tools they need to succeed in today’s interconnected world.
Community Impact and Partnerships
Beyond its business operations, GreenIT has consistently demonstrated a commitment to giving back to the community. The company actively collaborates with nonprofits and educational institutions, providing refurbished equipment to underserved communities.
Such partnerships showcase the company’s dedication to social responsibility, creating a positive ripple effect that extends far beyond the realm of technology.
Embracing the Future
As we step into the digital age, the role of refurbished IT equipment companies like GreenIT has become increasingly crucial. Their efforts in reducing electronic waste, providing affordable solutions, and promoting sustainability set the stage for a more inclusive and environmentally conscious future.
